container ship business

Maximising the efficiency of cargo operations

Since the turn of the century, the container ship business has been characterised by rapid developments and large market fluctuations.  The global concentration of the manufacturing industry in locations far from end users has been a key driver for these changes, which can be seen in variations in bunker prices, interest rates and freight rates.

The cargo system, whether for a feeder ship or for a giant long-haul post-Panamax ship, plays a vital role in a container ship’s earning ability. Firstly, the system has to provide the vessel with a maximum cargo capacity. Secondly, the system has to be efficient, flexible and operable to offer the maximum usage rate for the available cargo capacity in changing situations. The short port turnaround times call for fast and reliable cargo securing solutions during loading and unloading. Thus, the cargo system’s efficiency, flexibility, operability and reliability have a direct impact on both the ship operator’s “bottom line” and also on the environment.
At MacGregor, we have developed our way of working, our knowledge and our product portfolio in order to best support shipbuilders and shipowners in defining and choosing the most suitable cargo systems.

MacGregor offers compact, fully integrated cargo flow solutions for container ships, comprising deck cranes, hatch covers, fixed and loose lashings for deck and hold, lashing bridges on deck and cell guides in the hold. Our Lashmate® lashing software helps to evaluate and adjust actual loading cases.

The efficiency of port operations can be increased especially by applying electrical cranes that allow the optimal lifting speed for the weight of each cargo unit and automatic positioning system. As the first and last link in the transport chain, feeders are often geared with two or three slim-line deck cranes to maximise container stowage space.

Our aim is to keep your operation up and running, wherever you are in the world, throughout the lifetime of your ship or fleet.
